Shriver House Museum
In 1860, the Civil War came to Gettysburg, Penn., changing the lives of the town's citizens forever. The stories of the townspeople are told at the Shriver House Museum, a restored home occupied by the Shriver family during the Battle of Gettysburg. George and Hattie Shriver, along with their daughters Sadie and Mollie, lived in a house that provided the Confederate Army a clear view of the Union forces. The house was occupied throughout the battle, and today, the home has been restored to its original condition and is open to the public as a museum.
Stepping into the Shriver House Museum is akin to stepping back into 19th-century America. Actors in era-specific garb represent the townspeople of the time, and tours offer insight into how the Shriver family lived. The site is filled with artifacts of the family and other citizens in Gettysburg. Some of the most interesting findings have included Civil War medical supplies, ammunition and children's toys and clothes—thought to have belonged to the Shriver children. The museum offers a fascinating perspective into the civilian aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Practical Info

Shoreline Park
Shoreline Park is a 15 acre coastal park west of Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara, CA. It is a popular place to come for picnics and has individual picnic tables, a group picnic area, barbeques, park benches, a playground, sidewalks, and stairs that access the beach. Many people also come here to walk, jog, roller blade, and play Frisbee. The park offers spectacular views of the Santa Barbara coastline, the city itself, the Channel Islands, and the Santa Ynez Mountains. If you're lucky, you might even see some whales or dolphins.
Mesa Beach, which is connected to Shoreline Park, is narrow and rocky, and it is often covered due to the tides, especially during the winter months. During the winter, the waves often crash against the cliffs which has been eroding the shoreline. During the summer, there is more packed sand and the beach sees more visitors. Free parking lots are located near the park.

Shenandoah National Park
It may be best known for its fall colors, but there’s something to love during every season at Shenandoah National Park. During winter, the park glistens when covered in snow and ice. Spring means wildflowers, and in the summer, the park’s elevation calls for cooler temperatures. But regardless of the time of year, visitors should expect to see wildlife. More than 50 species of mammals live in Shenandoah, and although they do a good job remaining hidden, the park has one of the densest populations of black bears within the United States.
White-tailed deer are frequently seen along Skyline Drive, the scenic roadway that runs through the park, which is in total 105 miles long, running from the Front Royal (North) Entrance Station to the Rockfish Gap (South) Entrance Station in the Waynesboro-Charlottesville area. It takes about three hours to travel the entire length of the park, but with 75 overlooks, your time results may vary. The speed limit on Skyline Drive is 35 mph, and mile markers are used to help visitors locate places along the way.
With more than 500 miles of hiking trails (some of which include waterfalls), be sure to spend some time out of your car. The park is also one of just a few that allows leashed pets on most trails. There is an assortment of lodging choices available in the park, ranging from hotel-style rooms to cabins. There are also four campgrounds, and while backcountry camping is allowed, a free permit is required.

Silverado Trail
Set in California’s Napa Valley, the Silverado Trail is a historic country road that runs parallel to Highway 29. Between Napa in the south and Calistoga in the north, travelers will find roughly 40 vineyards dotting this 30-mile (48-kilometer) trek, with wineries famous for their big-bodied red wines and cabernet sauvignons.
The Basics
The Silverado Trail is a highlight of Napa and Sonoma Wine Country, with prestigious wineries such as Joseph Phelps, ZD Wines, Stag’s Leap, and the Miner Family. Many guided tours of the Silverado Trail include round-trip transportation from San Francisco, allowing you to enjoy multiple tastings without the necessity of driving. Bicycle tours are also available for travelers looking for exercise, fresh air, and views of Napa Valley’s rolling hills. Some tours include a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train, while private tours allow you to choose your own itinerary.
Things to Know Before You Go
- There are a multitude of dining options along the trail, from snack stops to gourmet restaurants. Shopping, lodging, and a variety of other services are also available.
- Pick up a map in Napa, as many fine wineries lie just off the Silverado Trail and are worth a visit.
- Wheelchair and stroller access varies between wineries.
How to Get There
The Silverado Trail runs along the eastern edge of Napa Valley and passes through Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and ends in Calistoga. The winding country road can be a challenging drive, especially for out of town visitors, so a guided tour is the best bet for travelers who want to enjoy multiple tastings.
When to Get There
Hours for winery tours and tastings vary by winery; most boutique, small-production wineries are by appointment only, so it’s best to call ahead. Fall is harvest time and the entire Napa region runs special events during this busy time, with crowds and lines to match, so planning ahead is key. Grape picking starts in August and runs through late September; visiting right after the “crush” (harvest) is over is a great option.
Harvest Time in Napa Valley
Napa Valley starts the “crush” period by picking grapes for sparkling and white wines in August, while red wine grapes are picked and processed in September and later into the fall. By mid-October, the pace has slowed down a bit and the valley smells like fermenting wine.

Shangri La
A guided tour of Shangri La is unlike anything else on Oahu, where the sun and sand of tropical beaches are swapped for the lavish, luxurious world of heiress Doris Duke. Here on the slopes of Diamond Head, Duke designed a soaring mansion of exquisite Islamic design—inspired by her travels in 1935 through much of the Islamic world. Over a span of nearly 60 years, Duke continued her epic travels through Iran, Egypt, and Morocco, and housed the art she’d find on her travels right here at Shangri La. Today the Islamic Art Collection includes over 2,500 pieces from across the Islamic world, and introduces visitors to cultures and styles not normally found in the tropics. On a guided tour of Shangri La, visit inside the historic home that faces out toward the ocean, and hear as docents discuss the details of archways, tile work, sculptures, and fountains that form a sense of Islamic exoticism just minutes from Waikiki. Hear tales from the life of a legendary traveler and “richest girl in the world,” who scoured the world for artistic riches and brought them here to her home.

Seward Street Slides
Tucked away from the main areas of the city, San Francisco's Seward Street Slides are a bit of hidden gem. Built in the 1960s by a local teenager for neighborhood kids, the two parallel slides are formed in concrete running down one of San Francisco's famous hills. The community garden and mini-park was up for redevelopment when locals protested the change. A 14-year-old girl designed the slides in a competition, and the space was officially converted into a park in 1973.
Some bring their own cardboard for the ride, but others find discarded pieces next to the slides that make the journey down a bit smoother. From the top of the slides, be sure to pause and enjoy the views of the city and the bay. A sign reads "no adults unless accompanied by children" to mark the park’s original intent.
Practical Info
The Seward Street Slides are located in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood at Seward and Douglas streets. It is recommended that full length pants be worn to protect the legs while sliding on the concrete. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Shark Valley
Situated in heart of what many call the “true Everglades”—a river of grass that stretches 100 miles (161 kilometers) from Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico—Shark Valley is part of a freshwater ecosystem with incredible biodiversity. It’s one of the best places in Everglades National Park to spot alligators, birds, and other wildlife.
The Basics
Visitors start their explorations at the Shark Valley Visitor Center to learn more about local ecology. A 15-mile (24-kilometer) paved loop circles through the area and is open to cyclists and pedestrians. One of the most popular ways to explore the area (and cover more ground than you could on foot) is via a guided tram tour. During this 2-hour excursion, visitors can spot wildlife while learning about the wetlands from an onboard naturalist guide.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Shark Valley is a must-visit for families and wildlife enthusiasts.
- Shark Valley tram tours are not included with national park entrance.
- Restrooms are available at the Shark Valley Visitor Center.
- The visitor’s center and one of the two walking trails is wheelchair accessible.
How to Get There
Because there is no public transportation to Shark Valley, the best way to get there is to join a guided tour with round-trip transportation, or to drive yourself. The visitor’s center is located along Highway 41, 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the Florida Turnpike.
When to Get There
The Shark Valley entrance to Everglades National Park is open daily from 8:30am to 6pm, even though the park itself is open 24 hours a day. The best time to spot wildlife is during the dry season (November to March); this is also when visitors will find the biggest variety of ranger-led programming.
What’s in the Name?
Shark Valley may seem like an odd name for an area of wetlands best known for alligators. This area of the park, added in 1989, is actually named after the Shark River Slough: the very river of grass that makes the Everglades so famous. The water of the Shark River comes primarily from Lake Okeechobee, and since there’s water in the area even in the dry season, animals tend to congregate here.
