Union Station
From the outside, the beige stucco, red-roof-tiled building looks like many Spanish-style structures found in the city, but the interior is actually a blend of Dutch Colonial Revival, Mission Revival and Streamline Moderne, three of the most popular architectural styles in L.A. The distinctive station has made appearances in several movies over the years, including the noir classic Union Station, To Live & Die in L.A., Speed, The Way We Were, and Batman re-spin The Dark Knight Rises.

U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial
The scene depicted by this memorial is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph called Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, taken by D.C. native Joe Rosenthal in 1945. Five of the six soldiers in the scene were Marines (one was part of the Navy Corps), and three died in this famous last battle of World War II.
At the memorial site, the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps presents the Marine Sunset Review Parade on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., generally the first Tuesday in June through mid-August. Wearing red-and-white dress uniforms, the corps perform a variety of military standards and vintage tunes from wartime eras.

U Street Corridor
However, the U Street area was almost wholly revitalized during the real estate boom of the 1990s. Still a bit gritty in the evenings (when music clubs like Black Cat and the 9:30 Club draw hip, young crowds), milder daytime attractions here include the famed Ben’s Chili Bowl (where longtime fan Bill Cosby offers the on-hold accompaniment for to-go orders), the funky, literary-themed café scene at Busboys and Poets, and the African-American Civil War Memorial and Museum. The independent shops here offer some of the city’s most unusual and artistic finds, from jewelry to clothing and housewares.

Union Square
The newly paved grounds of Union Square, bordered by brightly lit department stores and hotels, may not at first seem like an inviting place to hang out. But perch awhile on a skinny bench or grab a coveted seat at the café in the square, and you’ll discover some of the best people-watching in the city.
For in one day, you’ll see theater-goers debate the merits of the latest David Mamet productions, Nob Hill society dames in dark glasses duck into Maiden Lane spas for facials, and giddy teens wear out their parents while shopping for prom dresses.
But the real reason to come to Union Square is to shop. The square is home to six major department stores: Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Barney’s, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus. Boutique shoppers will find plenty of spots to browse the latest designer fashion. High-end emporiums surround the square, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Prada, and Giorgio Armani. Other stores, just south of Union Square along Market Street, include Old Navy, Apple Store, Anthropologie, and Urban Outfitters.
Nearby attractions include the theater district, Chinatown, and the French Quarter, with its many restaurants and cafes. Union Square is also only a few blocks from fashionable Nob Hill.
Practical Info
You can get to Union Square by all forms of public transportation. Two cable car lines (Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason) serve Union Square on Powell Street; the F-Market antique street car, trolley, and bus lines also stop here.

Tunnel View
A 2008 renovation included a more accessible viewing area, improved traffic flow and educational exhibits. Every vista from Tunnel View is picture-worthy, but for frame-worthy light, try to time your stop at Tunnel View to coincide with sunset, when the light turns to shadow and sweeps across the valley.
