Kennin-Ji Temple
The oldest and one of the most important Zen temples in Kyoto, Kennin-Ji was founded in the year 1202 by a monk. Situated near the famous Geisha district of Gion, Kennin-ji attracts Buddhist monks on pilgrimage, as well as religious locals and tourists, and curious explorers.
The main hall is a bastion of solemnity. The architecture features rooftops that curve upwards toward the sky, as if in prayer. The original temple complex contained seven buildings, but fires throughout the centuries destroyed many. The temple was rebuilt in the mid-thirteenth century and again in the sixteenth century. Today three outstanding buildings remain: the Dharma Hall, the principal building; a tea house; and the Imperial Messenger Gate. Interestingly, the gate dates back to the 12th or 13th centuries, and today marks from stray arrows during battles can still be seen.
Kennin-ji boasts a stunning Zen garden. Like most Zen gardens, Kennin-ji's is defined by its simplicity and beauty. An aesthetically pleasing placement of rocks, trees, and grassy areas create a calming, peaceful atmosphere for strolling or simply sitting and thinking.

Kenh Ga
The fishing village of Kenh Ga has been described by travel bloggers as amalgamation of Halong Bay, the marshy fens of England and Mediterranean Europe. And, perhaps visually, that’s true—Kenh Ga, is a working community set amidst limestone karst formations and rice paddies and its waterfront main drag is dominated by a bright yellow-steepled Catholic church. But it’s also a vibrant rural village whose residents, until recently, used to live entirely on the water as a floating village. The town retains its watery roots and the sleepy, green-brown Hoang Long River serves as its main drag. Villagers sell vegetables, fish along the riverbanks and even ferry children to the local school by boat, and it is still possible to find some families who continue to live aboard floating houseboats.
Kenh Ga, which loosely translates to ‘chicken canal,’ was supposedly named for its population of wild chickens and a local hot spring (included in some tours) that was used to soak chickens to ready them for plucking. The village is only accessible by boat and affords a glimpse into a community whose way of life has been little-changed by time.

Motorboats to Kenh Ga depart from the boat pier 6 miles from Highway 1 north. Boat tours from here cost around 200,000VND ($9USD) for two people and last about an hour and a half round trip. Several tours companies include Kenh Ga in multi-day itineraries originating in Hanoi; it is possible to find a day trip specifically to the Ninh Binh region that will likely also include the region’s other popular sites. Though generally the rainy season from June to September is a time to avoid popular outdoor sites, this attraction is at its prime when water levels are highest.

Kerala Backwaters
The Kerala backwaters refers to a large region spanning some 558 miles (900 kilometers) consisting of an interconnected network of brackish lagoons, lakes, and canals. The best way to truly experience this beautiful area is aboard a traditional houseboat; journeys last anywhere from a few hours up to a few nights.
The Basics
Most visitors to Kerala make a point of cruising its backwaters aboard a houseboat, which are traditionally made of locally harvested coir, or coconut fiber. Kawaguchi Lake
Kawaguchi Lake has the second largest surface area of the Fuji Five Lakes. It also has the longest shoreline, as well as the lowest elevation. The lake is situated at an altitude of around 800 meters, which means it has relatively cool summers followed by freezing cold winters.
The lake serves at the main hub for those looking to climb Mount Fuji during the climbing season (July and August), and is the most popular of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of tourism. Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine
Known as the shrine of love, the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is said to be around 1,500 years old. Its impressive entrance gate, called a torii, stands at 15 meters tall (around 50 feet). The main shrine is adorned with delicate carvings and has been listed as an important cultural building within the region. It is also a popular place for people to get married, as well as the site of a summer festival featuring tunnels of colorful wind chimes, live music, and even a ‘shrine bar’.
Dedicated to the God of Marriage, there is a good chance of witnessing a wedding procession on your visit to the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine. The site is surrounded by greenery and is not as crowded with tourists as other famous shrines, meaning if there is no wedding or festival during your visit, it’s a peaceful place to relax and take some photographs.
The shrine also has its very own restaurant; Musubi cafe serves various meals and desserts throughout the day and has a gift shop selling books and other souvenirs to remember your visit. Hikawa Shrine can be visited as part of a Kawagoe Walking Tour, which also takes in other famous attractions in the city.

Khajuraho
Khajuraho is a small town located in the Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh that is famous for its Hindu and Jain temples. The temples, which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, depict incredibly intricate (and erotic) rock sculptures of the Kama Sutra and other Hindu art.
The Vindhya mountain range provides a dramatic backdrop to the town, although the ‘Khajuraho Group of Monuments’ are undoubtedly the star attraction here. These temples are of Indo-Aryan architecture and were built between 950 and 1050 AD, during the Chandela dynasty. After the decline of the Chandela in the 13th century, the structures were left under a thick cover of date trees for many years before they were rediscovered, giving the town of Khajuraho its name. The site features 85 of the original temples, divided into three sections. The western group are the largest and best known, containing the most impressive temple of all – the magnificent Kandariya Mahadev.

Kbal Spean (River of a Thousand Lingas)
While the decaying structures and overgrown temples of Angkor Wat remain among the most popular destinations in Siem Reap, the rare collection of stone carvings along the Stung Kbal Spean River, often referred to as “Valley of 1000 Lingas,” continues to bring art and archaeology lovers outside the city and beyond Angkor.
The impressive carvings that line the 125-kilometer riverbed pay homage to the Hindu god Shiva. During the 11th and 12th centuries, artisans chipped away at delicate sandstone leaving intricate phallic symbols, mythological creatures and religious images along the shores. Kenroku-en Garden
Widely considered one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan, Kenroku-en Garden in Kanazawa began in the seventeenth century as a private garden for Kaga feudal lords. The garden first opened to the public in 1874 and was designated a National Site of Scenic Beauty in 1922 and upgraded to a National Site of Special Scenic Beauty in 1985.
In traditional Chinese gardening, there are said to be six attributes that make up the ideal garden landscape. Kenroku-en translates to ‘garden of six attributes,’ claiming to incorporate spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water features and panoramas into this single green space.
A 90-minute strolling course takes visitors past most of the park’s points of interest, including several ponds, an observation deck, a stone lantern, one of Japan’s oldest fountains and a couple of traditional tea houses. Each season brings a new look to the garden, with spring and its accompanying plum and cherry blossoms the most popular.

Kehen Temple (Pura Kehen)
Partially shaded by the dripping trunks of an old banyan tree, Kehen Temple, also known as Pura Kehen, is a many-tiered stone homage to the Hindu pantheon. Bearing stelae inscribed in Sanskrit, Balinese and Javanese that seem to indicate an 11th century founding, this is the state temple of the Bangli kingdom and considered one of the region’s finest. It is said to be a miniature version of Bali’s most significant temple, Pura Besakih, just 13 miles (21 km) away. The complex is comprised of a sloping terraced entryway, the main temple with three interior courtyards and a series of smaller meru shrines and altars.
The main temple is accessed by a series of 38 stone steps, passing eight well-manicured terraced gardens. Its elaborate carvings and tall, slender doors give way to three courtyards, the second bears inlaid Chinese porcelain and the innermost courtyard features an 11-tiered meru roof. Along the base of the buildings’ exteriors, it’s possible to see stylized carvings of snakes and turtles, representing the underworld. Within the central courtyard is an impressive moss-blanketed stone lotus throne. During the many annual religious ceremonies, like Pangerwesi when locals visit temples to guard against evil, it’s possible to see colorful dances on the temple grounds and baskets of fruit laid in tribute.

Kawagoe Ichibangai Street
In Japan’s Edo period, Kawagoe was a prosperous castle town and due to it escaping damage during World War II, the city still has many of its old streets still in tact. Ichibangai Street is lined with traditional buildings on both sides, making it full of character — the ideal place to learn about the history of the area while enjoying a spot of shopping.
This small street is around 400 meters long and is situated less than a kilometer north of Hon-Kawagoe Station. The style of the buildings are that of traditional Japanese warehouses (kura), that were specifically designed to be fireproof after a large fire ripped through the area in 1893. These days, many of the buildings are either shops or restaurants catering for a burgeoning tourist crowd.
Ichibangai Street is best explored on foot as part of a Kawagoe walking tour that also takes in the old city’s other attractions, such as Dream Street, Spatiotemporal Bell, Snack Street, and Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine.

Kerala Folklore Museum
The Kerala Folklore Museum opened to the public in 2009 as a space to showcase the cultural and artistic heritage of the southern Indian state. The 4,000-item collection spans three floors, each exhibiting a different architectural style, Malabar, Kochi and Travancore. Katsunuma Winery
Wine-making in Japan began in the 19th century and is now produced in various regions across the country. Situated in the Yamanashi Prefecture, Katsunuma lies within picturesque countryside at the eastern part of Kofu Valley and to the north of Mount Fuji.
The Katsunuma Winery was established in 1937 and lies at the very heart of the region, easily accessible as a day trip from Tokyo. The main building is styled on the traditional architecture of Japanese private houses. For three generations, the Katsunuma Winery have cultivated grapes in an area covering more than 70 acres, with 70% of their harvest produced from indigenous Koshu grapes.
Visitors can tour the cellars where the wine is stored in barrels for fermentation and the bottling process is conducted. The highlight for many of course is the wine tasting, with the Katsunuma Winery Co. producing their very own ‘Aruga Branca’ range.

Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary)
Keoladeo National Park (AKA Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary) is a former royal duck-hunting spot that today hosts some 350-odd of species of migratory birds throughout the year. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is lush and expansive; depending on when you visit, you may spot everything from pelicans to osprey to elusive Siberian cranes.
The Basics
Keoladeo is a wide, flat expanse with multiple ponds and marshes and lots of thick deciduous plant life. While the park can be explored on foot, many visitors opt to hire a bicycle rickshaw to take them on a ride through the park; the drivers, who are quite adept at spotting birds, often act as de facto guides. Many Golden Triangle tours also stop here, and going with a guide can be particularly useful if you aren't an experienced birdwatcher yourself.

How to Get There
The park is located in the Rajasthani city of Bharatpur, right off the main strip where many of the area’s mid-range hotels are located. The park is open throughout the year, and the best time to visit depends on what type of birds you want to see. Local species tend to hang around the park in August and September, while migratory bird season starts in October and continues through March. The Animals of Keoladeo National Park
No matter when you visit the park, you're likely to see birds: lots of them, from hornbills to warblers to eagles and cranes. Kawaguchi Sengen Shrine
Located on the north side of Lake Kawaguchi, the Kawaguchi Sengen Shrine was built in the ninth century after Mt Fuji erupted, causing chaos and tragedy among the locals. This shrine was built as a gesture by the people to appease the anger of the gods that they believed caused the mountain to erupt.
On the approach to the shrine, giant 800-year-old cedar trees line the path on either side, with stone lanterns guiding the way to the red pagoda beyond. In the past, the Kawaguchi Sengen Shrine was a common starting point for climbing Mount Fuji from the north, with the trailhead located directly behind the shrine's main hall. Most hikers today, however, are more in favor of cutting their journey time by up to five hours by forgoing a trip to the shrine and beginning their climb from the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station instead.
The Maternal White Falls are located around half an hour’s walk from Kawaguchi Sengen Shrine. These waterfalls are stunning enough on their own, but on a clear day, there’s also some impressive views of Lake Kawaguchi and the mighty Mount Fuji to be had along the way.

Kawah Putih (White Crater)
Kawah Putih (or White Crater in English) is a natural phenomenon situated near the market town of Ciwidey, 50 kilometers south of the city of Bandung. This unique lake crater is one of two created by the dormant volcano, Mount Patuha.
Kawah Putih has a striking, almost surreal, appearance to it; the lake transforms from a bright white to a light green or turquoise color, depending on the amount of sunlight present, while the soil surrounding it is completely drained of color due to the water’s high sulfur content. In addition, on cloudy days, the entire crater can often be found shrouded in a cloak of mist. The altitude here (around 2500 meters) brings with it low temperatures of around 10 degrees Celsius, making it a pleasant respite from the heat and humidity of the cities from which most visitors travel.
There are a range of simple facilities near the lake, including a car park, toilets, and food stalls. In particular, fresh strawberries and juice are commonly sold, as these are widely grown in the area. The smell of sulfur at the site is strong due to the steam and sulfurous gas bubbling from the lake, and masks are available for those who can’t stand the odour.

It takes around two hours to reach Kawah Putih from the center of Bandung. The turnoff from the main road to the lake is well-signposted with a large board directing visitors to the left of the road through a large entry gate. Vehicles can then be left in the main car park and a shuttle bus used to travel the final five kilometers to the crater.

Kedar Ghat
Home to the Kedarnath Temple, not to mention serene scenes of the sun rising from the holy waters of the Ganges, Kedar Ghat in Varanasi is one of the most important and picturesque ghats in the region. Popular among Bengalis and South Indians, the Kedareshwar Temple here is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of Varanasi, and is a fine example of Hindu architecture. There’s also a Parvati Kund nearby, a small pool of water that’s believed to have highly medicinal properties.
The approach to Kedar Ghat is through a maze of narrow alleyways bustling with cattle, devotees, and operators organizing River Ganges boat rides. The steps down to the water are high and steep, with the upper steps brightly painted in stripes.

Kaveri River
Known also by its English name Cauvery, this large river holds significance in Indian culture and history and provides extensive irrigation to southern India. The river covers a distance of about 475 miles (765 km) and flows through the Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu before emerging in the Bay of Bengal.
Many legends exist about how the Kaveri came into being. It is believed to meet up with the Ganges River and is considered sacred by many who believe it also has the power to wash away sins. Dams such as the Krishna Raja Sangara and Mettur store water collected during monsoons and release them during the dry months. The Kallanai Dam, constructed by King Karikala Chola over 1,600 years ago, was originally built of mud and stone, and is one of the oldest dams still in use today. The old city of Srirangapatna, home to the Dariya Daulat Palace (Summer Palace), is also located on an island on the river.

The Kaveri River flows throughout southern India and is accessible via both Bangalore and Mysore. The roads to many of the towns along the river’s course have been recently improved, and driving is the best way to reach most of them.
